Zach Eckersley’s late try in only his ninth Wigan Warriors appearance settled one of the great derbies between the reigning Super League champions and St Helens, as the Warriors reopened a four-point lead at the summit.
Paul Wellens’ men made the eight-mile trip over Billinge Hill to contest rugby league’s most ferocious rivalry without nine frontline players, almost all of them forwards. So many expected the all-conquering Warriors to swat aside the Saints with minimal fuss, though they too were without reigning Man of Steel, Bevan French, due to a torn hamstring.
