VEULES-LES-ROSES: There is special beauty, during the long lays of summer, in a sea coast which has a northern aspect. Here at Veules, all through the heat of the day, the high chalk cliffs throw a belt of shadow over the shelving rim of the beach, while the children at play on the level sands beyond are bathed in sunshine. The sea glows and shimmers away to the horizon, but does not weary the eyes with dazzling reflections. Towards evening, however, and in the early morning, and almost, all night long, is the scene of a marvellous panorama of changing lights and colours, and the effects of sunrise and sunset are more than doubled in splendour and mystery by the vastness of the space it opens to them and by the sympathetic blending of its tints with theirs.
There have not been many remarkable sunsets since I have been here; the weather has been too fine for that. But from my bedroom window I see nothing but cliff, sky, and sea; and the sensation of looking out, after the sun is down, is as if one had been caught up into heaven. From below a delicious murmurous rustling like the wings of innumerable angels, and, all about, deep wells, one hardly knows whether to say of light or darkness, a vast expanse of colour which only becomes more peaceful and more solemn as imperceptibly it dies away.
