Germany’s defence minister, Boris Pistorius, said he regretted that the US administration had made ‘concessions’ to Russia before peace talks with Ukraine had even started, as he attended a Nato meeting in Brussels on Thursday.
Donald Trump said on Wednesday that he and Vladimir Putin had agreed to begin negotiations to broker a ceasefire in Ukraine, later adding that he was ‘OK’ with Ukraine not having Nato membership and that it was unlikely Ukraine would gain much land back in the negotiations. The US defence secretary, Pete Hegseth, made similar comments and suggested that returning to pre-2014 Ukraine borders and joining Nato were ‘unrealistic’ outcomes of a negotiated settlement with Russia, as he addressed the Ukraine Defense Contact Group
