In an adrenaline-fueled new release, Pinkbike presents “The Setup – Flat Out in Andorra,” featuring pro riders Nina Hoffman, Bodhi Kuhn, and Jordi Cortes. Shot on the rugged and steep trails of Andorra’s mountainous terrain, the video showcases a blend of technical skill and fearless riding as the trio push their limits against a backdrop of stunning alpine scenery. This latest installment highlights not only the individual talents of Hoffman, Kuhn, and Cortes but also the unique challenges and thrills of riding one of Europe’s premier mountain biking destinations.
Challenges of Filming High-Speed Mountain Biking in Andorras Rugged Terrain
Capturing the adrenaline-pumping action of mountain biking in Andorra’s unpredictable landscapes required more than just high-end cameras. The crew faced the constant threat of rapidly changing weather conditions, with sudden mountain mists and torrential downpours complicating filming schedules. Navigating steep, rocky descents often meant carrying bulky filming rigs by foot, pushing the limits of endurance. To keep up with the relentless speeds of riders like Nina Hoffman and Bodhi Kuhn, cameras had to be mounted on specialized stabilizers and drones, designed to handle extreme vibrations and abrupt maneuvers without compromising frame stability.
- Terrain obstacles: rockfields, narrow trails, and dense foliage limited drone flight paths
- Lighting challenges: shifting sunlight filtered through mountain canopies required constant manual adjustments
- Safety concerns: protecting both the riders and crew in high-risk zones demanded meticulous planning
To streamline operations and maintain peak efficiency, the team implemented a rotational system, ensuring key personnel remained alert despite taxing physical demands. Portable power sources were essential, enabling quick battery swaps during intermittent breaks. The combination of analogue handiwork and cutting-edge technology was critical in delivering seamless coverage that never missed a second of the visceral intensity characteristic of riders like Jordi Cortes pushing flat out on Andorra’s formidable courses.
| Challenge | Solution | Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Unstable drone navigation | Customized flight paths with obstacle avoidance | Cleaner aerial shots with fewer interruptions |
| Vibrations from rocky paths | Shock-absorbing camera mounts | Smoother footage despite rough terrain |
| Limited daylight windows | Pre-planned shooting schedules | Maximized use of natural light |
Expert Techniques and Gear Recommendations from Nina Hoffman Bodhi Kuhn and Jordi Cortes
When it comes to pushing limits on the challenging Andorran terrain, Nina Hoffman, Bodhi Kuhn, and Jordi Cortes rely on a blend of finely tuned techniques and specialized equipment. Nina emphasizes the importance of maintaining a low center of gravity and mastering weight distribution to maintain traction through tight corners and uneven surfaces. Meanwhile, Bodhi focuses on efficient line selection paired with a smooth yet aggressive pedaling style that maximizes momentum without sacrificing control. Jordi complements these tactics with his signature approach to braking modulation, ensuring optimal grip and speed management on steep descents.
As for gear, this trio’s setup is thoughtfully curated to handle Andorra’s demanding trails. From lightweight frames designed for quick acceleration to high-performance suspension systems that absorb shock without energy loss, each component plays a critical role. Below is a breakdown of some of their essential equipment:
- Frames: Carbon fiber with reinforced downtubes for durability
- Suspension: Adjustable air shocks tailored to rider weight and trail conditions
- Tires: 2.4″ width with aggressive tread pattern for mixed terrain grip
- Brakes: Four-piston hydraulic discs for precise stopping power
- Pedals: Lightweight platform pedals with excellent grip pins
| Rider | Preferred Suspension Setup | Tire Pressure (psi) | Brake Rotor Size |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nina Hoffman | 150mm travel, medium compression | 28 | 180mm |
| Bodhi Kuhn | 140mm travel, soft rebound | 26 | 203mm |
| Jordi Cortes | 160mm travel, firm compression | 30 | 180mm |
